📘 Conjugation of Tenses (Sequence of Tense Rules):
When we connect a main clause and a subordinate clause, the tense in one clause influences the tense in the other.
This is called the Sequence of Tenses.
🔹 1. General Rule
⚠️ Exception: Universal or habitual truths remain in present tense, even if the main verb is past.(Past➡️ Present)
👉 He said that the sun rises in the east.
👉He loves you more than he loves me/he loved me/he will love me.
👉I see the man who does the work/did the work/will do the work.
📝(d) No sooner / Hardly / Scarcely Rules-
First clause = Past Perfect

Second clause = Past Indefinite
👉 No sooner had he left than it began to rain.
🔹 3. Conditional Sentences (If-Clauses)
Conditional sentences are the heart of sequence of tenses.
There are 3 main types + mixed conditionals 👇
✅ (i) Zero Conditional: Present Action/Order or Imperative, universal truth Sense(Present➡️Present)

Structure: If + Present Indefinite → Present Indefinite
👉 If you do not read, you fail.👉 If you meet him, ask him to ring me up.
✅ (ii) First Conditional:Future Action(Present ➡️Future)

Structure: If + Present Indefinite → Future Indefinite
👉 If he comes, I will help him.
👉 If it rains, we shall stay home.
🤔But in request or politeness:(Future ➡️Future)
👉If you will wait for a moment, I will just go and bring my purse.
✅ (iii)Second Conditional: Unreal Past Action(Past➡️Past Conditional)

Structure: If + Past Indefinite → would/should/could + V1
👉 If I were rich, I would travel the world.
👉 If she studied, she could pass.
⚠️ Note: “Were” is used for all persons in subjunctive mood.
✅ (iv)Third Conditional:Unreal Past Perfect Action(Past Perfect➡️Past Perfect Conditional)

Structure: If + Past Perfect → would/should/could + have + V3
👉 If he had worked hard, he would have succeeded.
👉 If they had studied, they might have passed.
✅ (v) Mixed Conditionals (Present ↔ Past mismatch)

If + Past Perfect → would + V1 (Present result of past condition)
👉 If I had studied law, I would be a lawyer now. -
If + Past Indefinite → would have + V3 (Past result of unreal present condition)
👉 If I were taller, I would have joined the army.
🔹 4. Important Exceptions

Universal truths, proverbs, scientific facts → Present tense.
👉 The teacher said that honesty is the best policy. -
Historical past retained
👉 He said that Napoleon died at St. Helena. -
Unreal wishes & conditions → Past or Past Perfect (Subjunctive).
👉 I wish I were a bird.
👉 It is time you went to bed.
