Right Forms of Verbs
Definition:
👉 The right form of verb means using the correct tense, aspect, or participle of a verb in a sentence according to grammar rules (subject–verb agreement, tense sequence, modifiers, etc.).
It ensures that the verb fits logically and grammatically with the subject, auxiliary verbs, and sentence context.

Rule 1
Present Indefinite Tense-এর subject যদি third person singular হয় (he, she, it, singular noun), verb-এর শেষে s/es যোগ হবে।
✅ He eats rice.
✅ She plays football.
Plural subject হলে verb-এর শেষে s/es যোগ হবে না।
✅ They play football.
✅ We eat rice.
Rule 2
Present Indefinite-এ negative sentence হলে does not ব্যবহৃত হবে, তখন verb-এর শেষে *s/es যোগ হবে না।
✅ He does not go to school.
✅ Ashish does not eat rice.
Rule 3
Past Tense বা Future Tense হলে verb-এর শেষে s/es যোগ হবে না।
✅ He went to school.
✅ He will go to school.
Rule 4
Modal Auxiliary Verb (can, could, may, might, shall, should, will, would, ought to, need, dare, have to, must) এর পর verb-এর present form বসে।
✅ He can do the work.
✅ I shall go to school.
✅ You must come home.
✅ He should study hard.
Rule 5
Universal truth (চিরন্তন সত্য) বা Habitual fact (অভ্যাসগত কাজ) → Present Indefinite Tense হবে।
✅ The sun rises in the east.
✅ Ice floats on water.
Rule 6
Passive voice + Modal auxiliary verb → be + Past Participle।
✅ It can be done by you.
✅ All the fruits could be taken.
Rule 7
Had, rather, let, would better, had better, need not, do not, does not, did not, did never ইত্যাদির পরে verb-এর present form বসে।
✅ I let them use my shoes.
✅ I had better go to the market.
✅ I need not do the work.
Rule 8
Have/has থাকলে Present Perfect Tense হবে।
✅ He has done the work.
✅ They have eaten rice.
Rule 9
Sentence-এ yet, just, just now, recently, already, lately, ever থাকলে → Present Perfect Tense হবে।
✅ He has taken his lunch just now.
✅ They have already come home.
✅ I have met him recently.
Rule 10
Sentence-এ yesterday, ago, last year, last week, last month, that day, day before থাকলে → Past Indefinite Tense হবে।
✅ He came home.
✅ I went to Cox’s Bazar last month.
✅ A long time ago, there lived a poor farmer.
Rule 11
“To” এর পরে সবসময় verb-এর present form বসে।
✅ You need to do the work in time.
✅ He went to the market to buy a shirt.
Rule 12
Since / For-এর পরে সময়ের expression থাকলে → Present Perfect Continuous tense হয়।
✅ He has been doing the work since the morning.
✅ It has been raining for two hours.
Rule 13
If clause-এ Present Indefinite tense হলে, পরের clause-এ Future Indefinite tense হবে।
✅ If he comes, I’ll go.
✅ If you work hard, you will shine in life.
Rule 14
With a view to / Look forward to → verb-এর সাথে ing যোগ হবে।
✅ I’m looking forward to getting a job.
✅ She went shopping with a view to buying a shirt.
Rule 15
By এর পরে verb + ing।
✅ She expressed her feelings by crying.
✅ By digging the land, she planted trees.
Rule 16
Preposition (for, of, in, with, without, before, after ইত্যাদি)-এর পরে verb + ing।
✅ I’ve never been tired of going there.
✅ She can’t go without waiting for me.
Rule 17
Mind, would you mind, past worth, could not help, cannot help → verb + ing।
✅ Would you mind giving me the book?
✅ He cannot help doing the assignment.
Rule 18
Sentence শুরু হলে would that থাকলে subject + could + verb-এর present form।
✅ Would that I could be a writer like Humayun Ahmed.
✅ Would that I could buy a car.
Rule 19
To be / having / got → verb-এর past participle form।
✅ The assignment is to be completed immediately.
✅ I got the certificates sent by the Headmaster.
Rule 20
Brackets-এ (be) থাকলে tense অনুযায়ী am/is/are/was/were বসে।
✅ It was two years ago.
✅ Allah is everywhere.
✅ One of my friends is an honest person.
Rule 21
বর্তমানে কোনো কাজ চলতে থাকলে Present Continuous Tense হয়। (now/at the moment থাকলে)
✅ He is watching TV now.
✅ They are doing their assignment.
Rule 22
If clause → Present Indefinite হলে, পরের clause → Future Indefinite।
✅ If you come, I’ll go.
✅ If you drink milk, you will be healthy.
Rule 23
If clause → Past Indefinite হলে, পরের clause → subject + would/could/might + verb-এর present form।
✅ If he came, I would go to the market.
✅ If I were rich, I would help the poor.
If clause → Past Perfect হলে, পরের clause → subject + would/could/might have + verb-এর past participle।
✅ If he had come, I would have gone to the market.
✅ If you had walked fast, you could have reached the station.
Rule 24
Wish / Fancy / It is time / It is high time → verb-এর past tense।
✅ I wish I won the first prize.
✅ It is high time you changed your bad habits.
Rule 25
As if / As though → verb-এর were ব্যবহার হয়।
✅ He speaks as if he were the leader.
✅ He acts as though he were a hero.
Rule 26
Each, every, everyone, anybody, somebody, nobody, either, neither ইত্যাদি → verb singular হবে।
✅ Each of the students was present.
✅ Every father dedicates his life to his children.
✅ Neither of the two brothers was present.
Rule 27
While + verb → ing। কিন্তু while + subject → past continuous।
✅ While walking through the zoo, I saw a lion.
✅ While it was raining, I was watching a movie.
Rule 28
যদি subject দেখতে plural মনে হলেও অর্থে singular হয়, তাহলে verb singular হবে।
✅ Twenty miles was a long way.
✅ Two hundred miles is not a long distance.
Rule 29
Main clause past tense + পরের অংশ next day/next week ইত্যাদি → subject + should/would + verb।
✅ He told that he would go home the next week.
✅ She said that she would buy land next year.
Rule 30
After / Before clause → প্রথমে past perfect tense, পরে past indefinite।
✅ The train had left the station before we reached.
✅ The doctor came after the patient had died.
Rule 31
Passive voice + person অনুযায়ী auxiliary verb + past participle।
✅ English is spoken all over the world.
✅ We are taught English by him.
Rule 32
Principle clause past tense হলে subordinate clause-এর verb-ও past tense হয়। কিন্তু principle clause present হলে subordinate clause-ও present হয়।
✅ He was so ill that he would not go to school.
✅ They understand that he will not come.
Rule 33
The + adjective → plural sense বোঝালে plural verb হয়।
✅ The rich are not always happy.
✅ The poor suffer a lot.

One of + plural noun → verb singular হবে।
✅ One of my friends is an honest man.
✅ One of the boys was absent.
Rule 35
More than one + noun → singular verb হয়।
✅ More than one student was absent today.
✅ More than one question has been asked.
Rule 36
A number of + plural noun → plural verb, কিন্তু The number of + plural noun → singular verb।
✅ A number of students were present.
✅ The number of students is increasing.
Rule 37
Either…or / Neither…nor → verb nearest subject অনুযায়ী হয়।
✅ Either you or he is responsible.
✅ Neither the teachers nor the students were present.
Rule 38
Collective noun একসাথে বোঝালে singular verb, আলাদা বোঝালে plural verb।
✅ The committee has taken its decision. (unit)
✅ The committee are divided in their opinions. (individuals)
Rule 39
Gerund (verb + ing) subject হলে singular verb হয়।
✅ Smoking is injurious to health.
✅ Reading novels gives me pleasure.
Rule 40
Future tense কখনো if-clause-এ বসে না, main clause-এ বসে।
✅ If it rains, we will stay home.
✅ Not: If it will rain, we will stay home.
